If you are new to the game, sports betting may seem a little complicated and confusing. One reason for this is that this is that there is a bit of jargon you need to become familiar with. Some terms can be used interchangeably and depending where you live in the world or the person you are talking with, you may hear the same bet referred to if different fashions. For instance, in North America, sports gamblers (punters) will often refer to the wagers a bookmaker offers as lines, whereas in Europe, you will more often hear punters refer to the wagers a bookmaker offers as markets. Viva Macau employs writers from around the world and you will see that our site uses these terms interchangeably, so if you spend a little time reviewing the information on our site it will help you master this terminology fairly quickly.

The most straightforward bet is a Moneyline market, sometimes also referred to as a Matchup or a Head to Head. Usually, when you are talking about a team sport, such as basketball or baseball, you will call it betting on the Moneyline, whereas in individual sports, such as boxing, you would usually refer to it as taking Matchup action. In either case, you are betting on the overall result of a game or event with no adjustment applied to the outcome. If the team or individual you wager on wins, you win your bet, but if they lose, so do you.

Typically, the Moneyline bet will be a push and your stake will be returned if the teams tie, but in a variation called a 3 Way Bet, or Head to Head with Draw, the market is offered with three options. In this type of bet, if the teams tie, and you have taken a side, you will loose your bet.

This is in contrast to a Point Spread market, where a handicap is applied to the events outcome to equate the abilities of two otherwise unequally matched teams or individuals. Punters will usually refer to a market as a Point Spread when they talk about American football and basketball. They sometimes use the term to describe a handicapped event in soccer, baseball and hockey as well, although there are more specific terms typically used for these sports because of differences in the wagering rules and terms of settlement. In soccer, a line that is offered with a spread adjustment is usually referred to as an Asian Handicap. In baseball, the handicapped market is called a Run Line and in hockey it is referred to as a Puck Line.

When you start looking at events where there are more than two participants, such as golf, motor racing or tennis, you will see us offer what is called an Outright market, sometimes call a Futures wager. In this type of bet, the market will usually list the top 15-25 top contenders and a bet on the Field. A bet on the Field places you on any contestant that does not have listed odds. Another type of market you will typically see in this type of format is a bet on a team to win a division or national championship. You will more often hear the market referred to as a Future in this case because it they are often listed far in advance of when the event actually occurs.

Totals markets, also called an Over/Under, are offered for many sports. Here you are betting on the predicted combined, or total, score of both opposing teams (participants). If a hard fought battle between teams who traditionally do not concede many points, is expected, the under bet is the way to go, but if both teams seem likely to post high scores, you would be smart to take the over bet option.

Combination wagers are a great way to improve your payouts. A combination wager is a single bet that links together the results of two or more events. With a combination wager, you could, for instance, bet on your team to win outright (a Moneyline bet) and bet that the total game score will be over 40 (a Total bet). There are countless possible combinations and variations. Parlays, Teasers, IF-Bet and Reverse wagers, are all examples of different types of combination bets.

Viva Macau's Sportsbook has well defined and time-honored Sportsbook Rules, which apply to all sports wagers placed with us. These rules lay out sport-specific rules that make clear exactly how wagers are settled in a variety of circumstances. For example, the Sportbook Rules will specify when a game is called, suspended, or doesn't take place at all, whether your bet stand or be refunded? These rules are both necessary and fair. They cover nearly every circumstance, to make it clear the terms under which the wager will be settled. Be sure to read and understand them before taking action and you won't be in for any surprises.
