Asian Handicap

Although Asian Handicapping is similar to a Point Spread, it differs fundamentally because, like Run Lines and Puck Lines, the handicap may be made in 1/2 point increments, reducing a traditional three-way, win, loose, draw into an event with only two outcomes.

There are occasions when the oddsmaker will set the handicap at zero or a whole number and pushing is possible under those circumstances. Asian Handicaps are also different from Point Spreads in that they cannot be included in combination wagers.

The two competing teams are evaluated based on their relative strengths to determine the handicap. Larger ability gaps will reflect a larger handicap. The winning team is decided on the final score after taking into account the handicap.

Single Handicap

In a Single Handicap wager you are betting on a single outcome of the event. You will win the bet if your team has the higher handicap-adjusted score at the conclusion of the event.

Asian Handicap Example 1:

Sevilla (-.05) @ .91 (-110) vs. Mallorca (+.05) @ .91 (-110)

Sevilla is favored to win over Mallorca. In this case the handicap has Sevilla playing at 'minus half a goal', or with Mallorca playing 'plus half a goal.' If you bet on Sevilla at -0.5, then Sevilla must win by at least a goal to win the wager. If you bet on Mallorca +.05, then Mallorca must at least draw, because you are giving them a half-goal start.

Asian Handicap Example 2:

Sevilla (-1) @ .91 (-110) vs. Mallorca (+1) @ .91 (-110)

The oddsmaker has allowed for a push option if Sevilla wins by one goal. In this case, if you back Sevilla, they must win by at least two goals to win the bet. You would win a bet on Mallorca as long as they do not lose by more than two goals.

Split Handicap (Splitball)

If the oddsmaker feels that a single handicap would give one team substantially more than an even chance of winning they may offer a Split Handicap Market. This allows them to give each team as close as possible to an even chance of winning.

A Split Handicap is a wager on the two quoted handicaps. Each imaginary bet will be determined in the same manner as a single ball handicap.

Split Asian Handicap Example:

Kalmar FF (0, -.5) Orebro @ .91 (-110) vs. Germany (0, +.5) @ .91 (-110)

If you wager $100 on Kalmar FF, $50 of you stake will go on Kalmar FF with no handicap and $50 will go on 'minus one-half goal'. If Kalmar FF wins by a goal you will win on both bets. If the two teams tie, the $50 stake on Kalmar FF is a push and the bet will be returned, the $50 stake on 'minus one-half goal' will be a lost.
