Totals are a popular way to gamble on American football because your bet is not dependent on who wins the game, just on the total combined score. Once the first quarter has ended, a second quarter line will be posted. Only the outcome of the quarter or half that is wagered on is used to grade the wager. For instance, if you were to bet on New York -3 1/2 points for the second half of a game, they would need to outscore their opponent by 4 points or more in the second half of that game to be a winner. The results of the first half of the game are irrelevant. Many punters love to wager on quarter and halftime lines because they can determine which way to bet based on how the teams are actually playing while the game is still in progress.
